Yesterday’s Children rose from the fertile mid-60s Connecticut music scene, transforming from a garage-based instrumental crew into one of the most potent proto-heavy rock acts of their time. As the decade wore on, they absorbed the swirling influences of psychedelia and hard rock, forging a sound that was heavier, wilder, and unmistakably their own.
With the steadfast support of their manager—Dominic Croce, father of frontman Dennis and guitarist Richard—the band built a strong regional following. Their sole album, self-titled and released in 1970, was recorded in New York with producer Warren Schatz. It’s a searing mix of originals like “Hunter’s Moon” and “Sad Born Loser,” paired with high-voltage covers, all delivered with an intensity that was ahead of its time. Though the record went overlooked in its day, it has since become a cult treasure, revered for its raw power and proto-metal bite.
Known for their explosive live shows—complete with homemade light rigs and sound systems—the band roamed the East Coast in vintage hearses, making a spectacle out of every gig. They disbanded in 1972, but Yesterday’s Children left behind more than just a killer album. They carved out a space in rock history, bridging the gap between garage grit and the thunderous wave of 70s heaviness. A true buried treasure for fans of psych, hard rock, and early metal.
