At the end of the 1970s, S.Y.P.H. stirred things up with their raw energy, unpredictable live shows, and songs like “Zurück zum Beton” and “Industriemädchen.” As part of the early wave of German-language punk bands centered around Düsseldorf's legendary Ratinger Hof, S.Y.P.H. stood out for rejecting genre boundaries. Drawing inspiration from punk, rock, krautrock, Dadaism, and everyday life, they carved out a unique sound that defied expectations.

After their debut album and several singles, the band collaborated with CAN’s Holger Czukay on two more albums — Pst and S.Y.P.H. — both now being reissued by Tapete Records, along with a collection of unreleased early recordings titled Punkraut 1978–1981.

Guitarist Uwe Jahnke recalls the magic of recording in CAN’s legendary Innerspace Studio: “It was a non-stop flight to the center of the universe… Pure magic was at work.” With Holger Czukay’s support, the band embraced spontaneous, intuitive creation, crafting music in the moment without pre-planned structure. The spacious, open energy of the studio played a huge role in making that possible — a musical universe where anything could happen.
