Boston's S.S. Decontrol (Society System Decontrol) are often cited as hardcore's first straight-edge band. Debuting in 1982 with The Kids Will Have Their Say, a split release by X-Claim and Dischord, the group came into their own sound with 1983's pivotal Get it Away EP.

Get It Away is 11 minutes of primal, hardcore mayhem, strewn with the near-metal wailing of new guitarist Francois Levesque – get a load of their reimagining of the Buzzcock's "No Reply." Though S.S. Decontrol would lay the foundation for an extremely prolific Boston hardcore scene at the time (Negative FX, Jerry's Kids, Gang Green); they were more aligned with bands who shared a similar socio-political bent, including Youth of Today and Minor Threat.
