Best known for his raw, blues-inflected free improv guitar work since his 2009 solo return A New Way To Pay Old Debts—following the end of his influential noise rock band Harry Pussy—Bill Orcutt has also spent two decades as a Silicon Valley software engineer.

In 2016, he bridged his dual worlds with Cracked, a minimal, open-source live coding audio program. Since then, he's used it to craft a string of experimental releases on his DIY label Fake Estates. A Mechanical Joey, his latest, stretches a Joey Ramone count-in sample into a hypnotic 35-minute piece, creating the eerie illusion of sound shifting through space.

A conceptual follow-up to last year’s Pure Genius, where AI voices count alongside bleeps, A Mechanical Joey reintroduces the human element—suggesting that even in a machine-driven future, resistance might still be possible.
